Personal papers of former directors, 1853-1960.

Papers from each of the directors; files for each director contain many letters and documents, with the exception of Rutlant's papers, which are missing. Only one album of newspapers remains, the album contains articles Rutlant clipped from journals and newspapers describing the Observatory and science at that time (1950-1960); items of interest are: observations and reports on work accomplished, 1853-1955; letters regarding the Mills Expedition, 1903-1906, 1907; report on the International Polar Year, 1932; information regarding the change of the official hour, 1929; fiscal reports, 1943; letter from Dr. Bruck (Cambridge), 1943; magnetic storm reports, 1943; letter to a Smith at the U.S. Naval Observatory, 1875-1884.
